Introduction to differential gears

1. Basic concepts

The differential gear is an important component of the automotive transmission system, mainly used to allow the driving wheels to rotate at different speeds, especially during turns. Its main function is to ensure that the vehicle can turn smoothly during driving, avoid tire wear, and improve driving safety.

2. Working principle

Rotation difference: When turning, the distance traveled by the inner and outer wheels is different, and the differential gear allows for different wheel speeds on both sides to avoid vehicle loss of control.

Power distribution: The differential distributes power from the drive shaft to the left and right drive wheels, and adjusts the speed of each wheel as needed.

3. Main components

Gear set: The core component of a differential, consisting of a main gear and a secondary gear, typically in the form of bevel gears.

Differential housing: accommodates the gear set and its related components, protecting the internal structure.

Bearings: Ensure smooth rotation of the gear set and reduce friction.

Locking device (optional): Some differentials are equipped with locking devices, allowing for synchronous rotation of both wheels in special situations such as off-road driving.

4. Types

Open differential: the most common type, suitable for most ordinary driving situations.

Limited slip differential: When one tire slips, it can distribute more power to the other tire, enhancing traction.

Locking differential: Under extreme conditions, it can completely lock the speed of both wheels, suitable for off-road and extreme driving environments.

5. Application

Sedans: Most commonly used cars in Japan use an open differential.

SUVs and off-road vehicles are often equipped with limited slip or lock up differentials to adapt to complex road conditions.

Racing: Using high-performance differentials to optimize the vehicle's performance at high speeds and during turns.

6. Maintenance and upkeep

Regular inspection: Regularly check the condition of the differential oil to ensure good lubrication and avoid wear.

Listen for abnormal sounds: If there is any abnormal noise, it should be repaired in a timely manner to prevent the fault from expanding.
